DEEPWATER, Mo. — Officials are trying to decide whether to file charges against a Missouri man who fatally shot his wife while trying to install a satellite TV system in the bedroom of their home.

Patsy Long, 34, of Deepwater, died after being shot in the chest with a .22-caliber handgun on Saturday. Her husband, Ronald Long, fired the shot from the inside of their home after several unsuccessful efforts to punch a hole through the exterior wall using other means.Henry County sheriff’s deputies said the woman was hit by the second of two shots fired by her husband.Long was given CPR by neighbors and family until medics arrived, police said. She was transported by air ambulance, but was pronounced dead at the hospital just after 6 p.m.

“He was under the impression that everybody was inside the residence, that he knew where everybody was at,” said sheriff’s department spokesman Maj. Robert Hills.

Hills said a person involved in such a case normally would be charged with manslaughter, but that would be up to the prosecutor.Link

Don’t go overboard with your keys in your pocket!

March 26, 2008 (Gizmag)

It’s an ingenious self-activating miniature bouy on a keyring and after several years of difficulties reaching market, the Seatriever Waterbuoy is now available and seeking international distribution. The UKP13 (US$26) Waterbuoy is the first product in a family of automatic floatation devices that will recover your mobile phone, keys, GPS receiver, PDA, binoculars, VHF radio or anything else that drops overboard.

Waterbuoy is a safety device for anything portable on your boat. It may only be the same size as a regular car key fob (70mm x 28mm x 18mm), but Waterbuoy packs some ingenious miniature flotation technology to stop precious objects from sinking to the bottom. When dropped into the water, Waterbuoy becomes a flashing emergency float for whatever it is attached to, making it possible to retrieve just about anything that you accidentally drop into the water.

“Waterbuoy is a unique product. It will lift up to 1kilogram back to the surface, it will stay afloat for at least 24 hours and it has an emergency flashing light that makes it visible from up to 250 meters away in the dark, so you can even get your valuables back at night,” explains James Halliburton, CEO of Seatriever International. “Waterbuoy is the world’s first and only high-tech solution to the most infuriating accident that can happen on the water.”

Waterbuoy’s operation is ingenious. Seconds after falling into the sea, canal, marina, lake or river, water passes into the body of the fob dissolving a patented automatic actuator that releases gas from a tiny tank into a bright orange balloon. The balloon breaks out of the end of the fob and continues to inflate. Simultaneously, a bright LED starts flashing which illuminates Waterbuoy from the inside like a Belisha beacon. The toughened balloon inflates to the size of a melon making it very easy to grab one-handed or retrieve with a boathook without fear of it bursting.

This year we will be supporting the Children Memorial Hospital with the hopes of making children with life threatening diseases just a little bit happier by sharing our love of video games with them. During the event, we would like to ask all attendees to bring any unused gaming systems, games, or game peripherals to be donated to the children at Chicago’s Children Memorial Hospital. If you would like to learn more about Chicago’s Children Memorial Hospital, please visit their site below.http://childrensmemorial.org/default.asp

What Games Will We Play?

This is going to be voted on by all the members of the site. We will take a first vote in the coming weeks to get an idea of what everyone wants to play. Once we get closer to the event, we will take a final vote depending on what consoles and games are out.

What Should I Bring?

Since this is a LAN party, we will not be providing any of the gaming equipment. So, we ask that you bring as much equipment as you can from the list below. We know this is asking a lot, but this is an unsponsored event and so cost of space, TV rental, and Prizes are factored into ticket price. 2old2play is also not creating this event for monetary gain so we only charge for what we need to pay for. It is possible that 2o2p will be able to gain sponsorship and if so, ticket holders will be notified and adjustments will be made to the list. Don’t forget to mark all your equipment. 2old2play will not be responsible for any lost consoles, games, or controllers.

Swiftpont Slider – Micro Mouse

Slider Mouse

The Swiftpoint Slider™, the second Simtrix device, holds broader market
appeal as it fits the rapidly growing ‘mobile’ sector of
“laptop-on-the-go” and home media center living room environments.

Here the lack of desktop space makes the use of traditional mice problematic if not impossible.

The ‘Slider’, as the name suggests, resolves this dilemma by an
ingenious design concept whereby it ‘slides’ over keyboard keys
-effectively enabling the keyboard area to become a “large mousepad”.

slider and mobile pcs

The Swiftpoint Slider™ is ideally suited to meeting the needs of the mobile computer market.

Mobile computing today demands a high level of convenience and usability across a broad range of environments: cafés, couches, bedrooms, boardrooms, trains, planes and beyond.

Existing HCI technologies — touchpads and mice — fail to meet these consumer demands for versatility.

Touchpads, although convenient and portable, are still seen as second-rate “back-ups” by most laptop users. Conversely, standard mice have accuracy and functionality but are not portable and cannot be used in many environments due to a lack of desktop space.

Because of its compact size and the elimination of the need for extra desktop space the Swiftpoint Slider™ combines the usability of a mouse with the portability of a touchpad, making it the ideal solution for use in multiple mobile environments.Slider Mouse useage

Slider Mouse Benifits

slider living room multimedia

The Swiftpoint Slider™ is also set to revolutionize the living room environment.

This is a new and fast growing user segment made up of two types of computer devices – media PCs, and next generation (internet ready) gaming devices. Microsoft has sold over 60 million copies of Media Centre worldwide, and over 38 million next gen consoles have been sold.

Microsoft’s newest operating system, Vista™, is set to make this living room functionality even more universally available, and consumers with new gaming consoles are rapidly upgrading to high definition TVs that are capable of displaying clear, legible web pages, email and instant messages.

With this new functionality comes a new requirement to perform efficient text entry (typing) and accurate pointer movement.

At present the “keyboard & mouse” combination is still universally regarded as the best way to interact with a computer. Within the living room environment this configuration is severely limited. The primary problem arises due to the keyboard typically sitting on the users lap leaving no ‘flat area’ upon which the mouse can operate.

slider demand

Users do not want a crippled user interface on their lap – they want the same power they have in their desktop / office environment. With Swiftpoint Slider’s™ innovative dual use of the keyboard as a mouse pad, users do not need to compromise their experience because of their environment.

$1,500 Stereo Camera… Come On!

Tricloptic TLR Camera
By Evan AckermanWhen I first saw this camera, I got all excited thinking that somehow it would be able to take pictures in some kind of extra super realistic 3D. I mean, you can take a normal stereo picture with two lenses, so maybe three lenses lets you see around corners. Or through clothing. Or back in time! But alas, the 3D World 120 Tri-Lens stereo camera is not capable of any of these feats. The third lens at the top seems to be used only for viewfinding, as it’s identical to the other two lenses (80mm F2.8) but has nothing behind it. The bottom lenses are fed 58mm x 56mm stereo film, with 6 image pairs per roll. This completely manual setup promises to be popular only with very serious stereo photographers… Very serious and very rich stereo photographers, that is, since although the price is still unknown, medium format 80mm lenses cost something like $1,500. Each.

Technical Specifications

  • Camera Type: Medium Format Tri-lens Stereo Camera (Reflex Viewing Lens)

700-MHz Aution Has Closed….. Who Won!?

Wireless Antane

March 19, 2008 (IDG News Service) The controversial 700-MHz spectrum auction has closed, raising $19.59 billion, a record for a spectrum auction in the U.S., the Federal Communications Commission said Tuesday.

The 700-MHz auction was the first to require anonymous bidding, and the FCC has not yet revealed which companies won the rights to the bands that were sold. While Google Inc. was instrumental in pushing the so-called open-access rules for the auction, it is still unknown if the search giant bid for or won any of the licenses.

The open-access rules, which apply to one-third of the spectrum, require operators to allow customers to use any device they want, and download and use any applications.
