Apple previews iPhone OS 3.0, adds copy and paste, Spotlight search, plenty more

As promised, Apple just debuted its upcoming iPhone OS 3.0. Much of the news seemed developer-centric, but there are certainly plenty of consumer implications down the road, along with long-awaited functions like copy and paste, A2DP, MMS and universal Spotlight search.

Improvements include:

Google Chrome Blog: Google Chrome has a new beta

The best thing about this new beta is speed — it’s 25% faster on our V8 benchmark and 35% faster on the Sunspider benchmark than the current stable channel version and almost twice as fast when compared to our original beta version.

New iPod shuffle requires extra adapter for third-party headphones

We were wondering why the new voice-enabled iPod shuffle even has a standard 3.5mm headphone jack since it’s controlled by proprietary
headphones, and we just got the answer: non-Apple headphones will require a special dongle that includes the new three-button controller,
and Apple says it’s working with third parties to bring other compatible ‘phones to market. Yes, Apple’s cheapest iPod is now the most needlessly complex

Spray-On-Condoms, The Contraceptive That Never Made It To Market.

The Spray-On Condom

The Spray-On Condom

December 4, 2006 Researchers at the German Institute for Condom Consultancy plan to launch a spray-on condom – the Institute is currently conducting tests on a spray can into which the man inserts his penis which is then sprayed with latex from nozzles on all sides. The plan is to make the product ready for use in about five seconds and offer a more effective contraceptive that fits better than standard one-size fits all condoms and hence does not slip. Pre-market trials are underway to demonstrate the new latex condom is evenly spread when sprayed and to optimise the vulcanization process. The company is seeking Condom Testers with a penis length from 9 to 12 cm and 15 to 20 cm. Men between 13 to 14 cm are apparently welcome too, so we presume there must be some other qualification ‘cos that includes just about everyone. We could think of worse jobs, and if any Gizmag readers get the gig, please don’t forget to send us your business card. Video (in German) here.

Designed and marketed in cooperaation with Vinico and Qualo Design, the aim of the partnership is to develop the perfect condom for men that’s suited to every size of penis.

The company had hit upon the idea when considering the difficulties some people faced using condoms, and drew inspiration from spray-on medical dressings and bandages now used in medicine.

The condom spray can is expected to reach market in 2008 for a price of around EUR 20 (US$27) and will offer around 20 applications. Replacement cartridges are expected to cost half the initial purchase price for the entire pack, and will be offered in different strengths and colors. We can’t wait for the marketing department to finish its deliberations on the “strength grades” – athletic, sedate, sack-of-potatoes?

Man Goes Over Niagara Falls and Lives

Man jumps into Niagara River, goes over Horseshoe Falls, survives : Home: The Buffalo News

News Niagara Bureau

NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. — A man who jumped into the upper rapids on the Canadian side of the Niagara River and then fell over the Horseshoe Falls was rescued this afternoon after spending more than 40 minutes in frigid waters below the falls.

The man, who suffered a head injury and hypothermia, would not help emergency responders with his rescue but was saved when a firefighter using safety equipment swam out about 50 yards into the Niagara River, said officials from the Niagara Falls, Ont., police and fire departments.

The man, said to be in his late 30s, was either unable or unwilling to grab onto a pole extended out to him from two rescuers aboard a helicopter. The helicopter pilot then positioned the aircraft in a way that used the winds to push the man closer to the shoreline.
